Guidelines for Attending Events
Chatham House welcomes its members, corporate nominees and guests to hundreds of events each year. In order to create the most productive atmosphere for these events and to provide all attendees with a reasonable opportunity to access the limited space available in the building, members and guests are respectfully asked to note and observe the following:
- With membership and corporate nominees currently totalling c. 5,500, not every member or nominee will be able to attend every event. While Chatham House hosts up to 100 Members Events each year, some are more popular than others, and there is nearly always restricted capacity (for example, the Joseph Gaggero Hall seats 250, and the Neill Malcolm Room and Henry Price Room have a combined standing capacity of 200 for receptions).
- Chatham House colour-codes the status of each of the institute's events using a 'traffic light' system on the website. Events marked green are Members Events which means they are open and available to all members - subject to capacity and demand. Chatham House operates a transparent and equitable 'first come, first served' policy around registration for these events. Events marked yellow are open unless otherwise stated, but require registration and/or a small fee. Red events are either invitation only or require a fee. - Members or visitors who do not register for events and yet come to Chatham House in the expectation of attending may regrettably not be able to gain entry owing to physical capacity constraints. Wherever possible overflow facilities will be provided through the use of TV screens in other meeting rooms within the institute.
- Chatham House requests that all members, nominees and guests uphold high standards of behaviour, particularly towards other members, any other invited guests and staff. Attendees are expected to comply with all reasonable instructions from Chatham House staff or officials appointed by the institute. Chatham House staff aim to be diligent, professional and courteous at all times. - Members Events at Chatham House typically last one hour, with the first 30 minutes set aside for the speaker or speakers, and the remaining half-hour for a Q&A session. If you intend to ask a question or make a comment, please ensure that it is concise and to the point, so as to give as many other members as possible the opportunity to speak as well. - Chatham House events that are held on the record are often made available online, including in audio and video form. Attendees should be aware that if they ask questions these are likely to feature in content associated with the event. They should also be aware that they may be visible in the audience in photos or video of events.
- It is not permitted to distribute literature or marketing materials within Chatham House that have not been authorized by the institute.
- Those under the age of 18 who wish to join Chatham House may only do so if a parent or guardian is already a member. They must remain with them at all times when attending Chatham House. Members under the age of 18 are legally not allowed to consume alcohol anywhere within Chatham House. We also reserve the right to refuse admission to any member under the age of 18 to any Chatham House reception where alcohol is being served, although they may attend the event the reception is linked to. These receptions include but are not restricted to: Members, New Members, Research, and Under 35 Events and Conferences.
- Chatham House reserves the right to refuse admission to events and, if a member, nominee or guest behaves in a disruptive manner during a meeting, to ask that individual to leave the building.
- If Chatham House takes disciplinary action against a member, nominee or guest, an appeal process is in place whereby a grievance can be communicated in writing to the Director.
