Global Solutions to Sexual Violence in Conflict

Monday 18 February 2013 13:00 to 14:00 GMT

Chatham House, London

Haja Zainab Hawa Bangura, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict
Chair: Professor Christine Chinkin, Professor of International Law, Centre for the Study of Human Rights, Department of Law, London School of Economics

Type: Members Events

Zainab Bangura will argue that sexual violence in conflict is a global problem that needs an international peace and security response.

Sexual violence has been used in the context of elections, political strife and civil unrest and has been a particular impediment to peace-building in post-conflict situations. Ms Bangura will argue that solutions cannot be imposed from the outside and individual governments must have the political will to implement policies that lead to the end of conflict-related sexual violence. She will explore ways to effect lasting change through increased national ownership of the issue and effective global responses to it.
