Chatham House

This is a transcript of a speech made by Yezid Sayigh, Senior Associate, Carnegie Middle East Center, on 25 January 2012 at Chatham House.

The speaker discussed the challenges facing those countries across the Arab world that have experienced uprisings since January 2011. He argued that these countries will not be radically changed or democratised in a short space of time. The process of democratic transition, he said, will be different in each country and will most likely be difficult, messy, possibly bloody, and often partial.
