  • The prevailing mood in much of Russia is the fear of incipient stagnation and eventual political crisis. The original Putin formula of stability, in the sense of leaving politics to those in power in exchange for increasing wealth for those outside the magic circle, has been compromised. 
  • The more authoritarian the Russian regime becomes, the greater the risk to its legitimacy and ultimately, its power. Putin has become the linchpin of a fully personalized system. 
  • A full and proper exchange of ideas is a necessary preliminary to the renewal of Russia's polity.
