This project examines US power.
The notion that American power is in decline has resurfaced in recent years. Much of the debate surrounding this idea has been infused with ideology, sentimentality or economic determinism. Many analyses tend to be overly reliant on long-run linear economic projections, or rooted in a seemingly unerring belief in America's capacity for national renewal. The situation is complicated by the fact that non-state actors such as business, academia, media and foundations have a significant and growing impact on America’s influence overseas.
This project will provide a strategic umbrella for research into US decline through studies that examine various aspects of American power. Areas of focus include the US's changing alliances in Asia, the role of non-state actors in US foreign policy and the use of American power through different diplomatic mechanisms (including bilateral, multilateral and ad hoc groupings).
