Asian Demographics

This research will seek to explore what lessons can be learnt from different demographic patterns in Asia.

The Asia Programme is seeking funding for a major comparative research project examining demographics in Asia. Some countries, like India, see themselves benefiting from a 'demographic dividend' as they take advantage of a rising workforce. Here, though, there are concerns of a skills mismatch. Countries like Japan, however, already face rapidly aging populations. China's one-child policy will mean that it will "age" faster than any other country. The research will seek to explore what lessons can be learnt from these different demographic patterns.
