Work on Japan aims to promote understanding of Japan's economic, political and social development, and its impact upon the world.
Drawing on the work the programme conducts across East Asia, forthcoming analysis on Japan will include examining links between Japan and other East Asian economies after the Sendai earthquake, the state of Japanese healthcare, and Japan’s maritime relations with its East Asian neighbours.
The Japan Discussion Group provides a unique forum and opportunity to bring together a diverse community of individuals involved in Japanese affairs. The events are usually attended by around 20-30 people and after a presentation on an issue relating to Japan, there is a roundtable discussion.
The Japan discussion group was set up in 1999 and has successfully convened events since to discuss topical issues arising around Japan and their regional and global impact. A wide range of political, diplomatic, media and academic experts are invited to these meetings, as are Chatham House's members.
The Japan Discussion Group is currently being generously supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
