This initiative provides an in-depth analysis of the country‘s domestic politics as well as its economic, foreign and security policy.

The MENA programme’s Turkey Initiative provides an in-depth analysis of the country’s domestic politics as well as its economic, foreign and security policy. It also delves into Ankara’s role in its surrounding regions, including the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean, and in conflict zones and post-conflict stabilization efforts. The project examines the nature of Turkey’s evolving relations with major global powers.

The initiative aims to provide a better understanding of Turkey to regional and international policymakers, as Turkey becomes an increasingly important actor in contemporary international politics and Middle Eastern affairs.

Key issues examined through the project

  • Turkey’s domestic politics and economy;
  • Ankara’s policy towards regional crises in Iraq, Syria and Libya, and post conflict stabilization in the Middle East’s conflict zones;
  • Turkey’s relations with key international actors including the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Russia and China;
  • Ankara’s approach towards regionalism, regional cooperation and multilateralism in the MENA region, and the evolving nature of its relations with Middle Eastern powers;
  • Turkey’s policy towards regional security and the energy order in the Eastern Mediterranean;
  • The nature and future of Ankara’s relations with non-state actors in the Middle East; and
  • Turkey and the regional Kurds.
