Summary

Irakli Alasania was Georgia’s Minister of Defence until 2014, when Georgian forces worked with NATO and EU-led operations in the Central African Republic. He is Chairman of the Free Democrats, a pro-west liberal party. As Georgia’s Ambassador to the UN he achieved recognition of the right of all refugees and internally displaced persons and their descendants to return to Abkhazia, Georgia. He also served as Head of the Abkhazian Government-in-Exile, and Special Envoy for the Georgian-Abkhaz peace talks re-initiated in 2005.
