Advancing Palestinian Reconciliation and Middle East Peace
Nickolay Mladenov, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process
Chair: Neil Quilliam, Acting Head, Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House
In April 2014, Fatah and Hamas signed a reconciliation agreement aimed at ending their political discord. However, the agreement was not adhered to and old divisions quickly re-emerged.
Drawing on his experience in Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov will discuss ongoing efforts to bridge the political divide between the West Bank and Gaza and bring the territories under the leadership of a single, democratic and legitimate Palestinian Authority. He will discuss the challenges that must be overcome to advance reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, consider the role of Israel in furthering or stalling the process and analyse how, if an agreement can be brokered, reconciliation might impact the prospects of negotiating a lasting, two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
Attendance is strictly by invitation only. To enable as open a debate as possible, this event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, this event has had to be cancelled.
