Afghanistan in 2017: A Looming Humanitarian Crisis
Timor Sharan, Afghanistan Senior Analyst, International Crisis Group
Chair: Charu Lata Hogg, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House
The speaker will argue that the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has deepened and the drivers have become more complex, involving an expanding insurgency, complex regional situation and deteriorating economic problems. In 2017, the expanding conflict, politicization of refugees and undocumented migrants, and the emerging complex regional situation are likely to worsen the crisis, making humanitarian work difficult.
Drawing on months of fieldwork, Dr Sharan will underline the long-term socio-economic impact of these factors on political stability and violence in Afghanistan, and set out some recommendations to deal with the crisis.
