Africa's New Agenda for Economic Transformation

10 March 2015 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Chatham House, London

Dr Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa
Chair: Bob Dewar CMG, Associate Fellow, Africa Programme, Chatham House

Africa’s vast economic potential now dominates discourse about the continent’s development. Accelerating levels of urbanization and education, an abundance of natural resource wealth and increasing access to capital mean that there is vast potential for rapid growth across Africa. However significant obstacles to economic development remain, including weak infrastructure, poor governance and barriers to free trade.

Dr Lopes will discuss how Africa can consolidate its economic transformation and overcome impediments to sustainable development. He will also recommend policies to support equitable and inclusive growth and industrialization on the continent.
