Overview

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) will face a major test in important local elections in August 2016. Local governments have large budgets and have a vital role to play in national transformation. But persistent attacks from inside and outside of the party against a president embroiled in scandal have marred the ANC’s reputation as it seeks to remind voters of its service delivery and support for the country’s poorest. The August elections will be a test of local and national leadership and will shape the future of ANC policy as the party seeks to maintain its high level of support across an increasingly diverse nation.

At this roundtable, Treasurer General of the ANC, Dr Zweli Mkhize, will discuss the importance of local government for national transformation, and the policy priorities of the ANC to shape South Africa’s future.
