The Annual Russia Lecture: The Role of Energy Resources in Russia’s Future

Add to Calendar

Chatham House, London

Participants

Thane Gustafson, Professor of Political Science, Georgetown University

Chair: John Lough, Associate Fellow, Russia and Eurasia Programme, Chatham House

Overview

Russia’s energy wealth has long been the main pillar of the country’s economy and Russia depends more on energy today than it did during the Soviet era. Abundant energy shores up a system weakened by Russia’s chronic inefficiency and corruption but it has also helped the government avoid difficult and unpopular reform.

What will be the long-term future of such a hydrocarbon-addicted system in a world that is gradually moving toward decarbonization?  Professor Thane Gustafson, author of Wheel of Fortune: the Battle for Oil and Power in Russia, will share his views on Russia’s energy outlook and its impact on the rest of the country’s economy.
