Are the Sustainable Development Goals more than Aspirations?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a broad set of 17 objectives agreed by the UN in 2016. Ranging from ending poverty and hunger to ensuring gender equality and reducing inequality, they also include targets around sustainability and the environment. With each goal accompanied by a set of targets, this event will probe into whether the SGDs can become a clear and inclusive agenda that governments can adopt into policy or do they cover too much ground to be effective and measurable?
The panellists will analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the SDGs on the global stage. They will discuss whether it is feasible for governments to put the goals into practice especially in countries, such as the UK, who have traditionally focused on the goals’ effectiveness through international, rather than domestic, policy. If is not, should the SDGs be consigned to political theory and a more streamlined set of targets be adopted?
