Asia and the UK: Forging a New Relationship Post-Brexit
In the wake of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, much of the discussion so far has focused on what Brexit would mean for Britain’s relationship with the EU. But a change in Britain’s relationship with Europe will also have significant effects on its relationships with other countries and regions. Countries which have trade deals with the EU, and a stake in the UK economy, are expected to look closely at the Brexit negotiations and how this will affect their economies and businesses in the future.
The UK has a long and historic relationship with Asia. Japan, in particular, is one of the largest foreign investors in the UK and has been vocal in its views on Brexit, both before and after the referendum result.
This event looks at the impact of Brexit on some of the UK’s key trading partners in Asia. How has the referendum result been perceived in the region and what are the hopes of the UK’s Asian partners from the forthcoming negotiations with the EU? The panel will then analyse new opportunities for the UK and Asia to work together in regards to trade, diplomacy and security.
