Asset Recovery in Uzbekistan

3 October 2017 - 11:00am to 12:30pm

Chatham House, London

Kristian Lasslet, Director, Institute for Research in Social Sciences, University of Ulster
Shahida Tulaganova, Independent Journalist

Following the bribery scandal centring on Gulnara Karimova, daughter of Uzbekistan’s former President Islam Karimov, the United States Department of Justice launched civil forfeiture actions to recover $850 million in financial assets. The $850 million frozen by the United States is currently subject to negotiations between the US Department of Justice and Uzbekistan, with Tashkent claiming the funds ought to be returned to the state, and the state’s critics arguing a more cautious return should be pursued, ensuring the millions benefit the real victims: the people of Uzbekistan.

At this expert roundtable, Kristian Lasslett and Shahida Tulaganova will discuss the issue of confronting grand corruption in Uzbekistan in the context of this case. Kristian Lasslet will present the key arguments of his report A Dance with the Cobra: Confronting Grand Corruption in Uzbekistan. Shahida Tulyaganova will discuss the political context in Uzbekistan and developments since Shavkat Mirziyoyev assumed office in 2016.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
