From the Balkan Wars to ISIS: The Challenge of Safeguarding Manuscripts in Conflict Zones
The panel will address the scale of destruction to cultural property by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Focusing on the threat and damage to manuscripts, archive collections and books, the expert speakers will draw on recent history and lessons learned from the Balkan wars to assess how the international community should respond. They will consider the legal instruments that exist to bring to justice to those criminally responsible and comment on whether these remain fit for purpose.
This event is held in association with The Islamic Manuscript Association in conjunction with the course 'Islamic Manuscript Collections in Conflict Zones: Safeguarding Written Heritage'.
