The Burundi Crisis: Risks on the Road Ahead
In April 2015, President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his intention to run for a third term, sparking the worst violence seen in Burundi since the end of the civil war in 2005. The crisis was exacerbated earlier this month when a Burundian court upheld the president’s interpretation of the constitution. More than 15 people have been killed and an estimated 50,000 people have fled to already strained neighbouring countries.
At this roundtable, Dr Devon Curtis will present her assessment of the crisis, prospects of a return to calm and options for securing sustainable stability. She will also explore regional implications of the crisis.
