Overview

After accepting the 2015 Chatham House Prize on behalf of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), International President Dr Joanne Liu made a passionate call for political responsibility and urged Europe and North America to reject short-sighted policy responses to humanitarian crises.

Earlier in the day, she took part in a special session with the director of Chatham House, Dr Robin Niblett, where she discussed MSF’s role in combating the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and addressed a range of other current challenges facing the organization.

Chatham House Prize 2015

This year, members voted for MSF in recognition of its work in combating the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. MSF was among the first groups to respond to the epidemic in March of that year and remained engaged on the ground throughout the crisis, caring for the majority of patients in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. MSF leaders and staff were persistent and forceful in their action to halt the spread of the epidemic and, as a result, were instrumental in saving thousands of lives.
