Culture on the Frontline: Protecting Cultural Heritage in Conflict Zones

Chatham House, London

International Security Department

Participants

Irina Bokova, Director-General, UNESCO
Chair: Peter Stone OBE, Professor of Heritage Studies; Head of School of Arts and Cultures, Newcastle University

Overview

In view of the UN Security Council's adoption of Resolution 2199 which includes condemnation of the destruction of cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria, Irina Bokova will speak on the urgent need to protect cultural heritage from looting in conflict zones, and ways that states, law enforcement agencies and NGOs can achieve this goal. Participants will be invited to discuss the wider implications that the illicit trade in cultural heritage has for international security, particularly as a source of funding for terrorists and organized crime networks.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
