Death of the White Paper: Can Fiction and Art Inform Foresight in International Security?

Chatham House, London

Participants

August Cole, Senior Fellow and Director, Art of the Future Project, The Atlantic Council; Co-Author, Ghost Fleet: A Novel of the Next World War

Overview

Can narrative fiction really provide accurate insights into the implications and complexities of future conflicts? Against a backdrop of the proliferation of disruptive technologies and increasingly unpredictable social change, are national security services overlooking artists as an important potential asset?

August Cole will argue that if surprises are the new normal, creative insights into these trends can provide a critical predictive tool. Drawing on historic and contemporary examples, he will explore how such creative arts and artistic methodology can be utilized to inform the decision-making of governments, the military and security agencies when planning to guard against future wars and terrorist threats.
