Democracy and Stability in Turkey

Chatham House, London

Participants

Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, Chairperson, Republican People's Party (CHP), Turkey
Chair: Fadi Hakura, Associate Fellow, Europe Programme, Chatham House

Overview

The leader of the opposition in Turkey will argue that following the 2016 coup attempt and the subsequent response from the government - including mass arrests and suspensions of military personnel, judiciary and civil servants - a number of decisive initiatives are now required to safeguard the country’s development and influence on the world stage.

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu will set out his party’s strategy to achieve political stability and economic prosperity for Turkey. He will present the case that democracy can only be advanced in Turkey by reversing the constitutional amendments of April 2017. He will further argue that the current government’s policies have caused damage to Turkey’s relations with its international allies and that the path towards EU membership must be urgently revived.
