According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 3,000 migrants bound for European shores died crossing the Mediterranean in 2014. Human rights organizations have warned that the situation could deteriorate following the end of the Italian naval operation Mare Nostrum and the UK’s withdrawal of support for search and rescue operations. The panel will examine EU border and migration management policies and consider what actions could be taken to prevent further fatalities and to safeguard the rights of asylum seekers.
