Europe’s China Policy and the Benefits of Division

21 June 2016 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Chatham House, London, UK

James Reilly, Jean Monnet Fellow, European University Institute; Associate Professor, Department of Government and International Relations, University of Sydney
Chair: Tim Summers, Senior Consulting Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House

‘Europe must speak to China with one voice.’ The speaker will argue that this widespread assumption exaggerates the downsides of Europe’s divisions, and largely ignores their benefits. EU member states exploit their dual identities to expand engagement with China, attract Chinese investment and secure favourable trade arrangements, while working through EU institutions to build financial cooperation, pursue climate change negotiations, and build cooperation with China on development assistance.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
