The Future of American Power

22 June 2017 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Chatham House, London

Thomas Wright, Director, Project on International Order and Strategy, Brookings Institution
Chair: Dr Leslie Vinjamuri, Associate Fellow, US and the Americas Programme, Chatham House

Thomas Wright, author of All Measures Short of War: The Contest for the 21st Century and the Future of American Power, will assess why it is that a number of commentators are arguing that the liberal international order appears to be unravelling and, if indeed it is, what strategic choices face the United States and its allies. What will great power competition look like in an age of globalization? What are the implications for the global economy? How important are flashpoints like Ukraine and the South China Sea?

Crucially, Wright will ask how the liberal order can adapt and thrive in this new age. He will propose a new American strategy – ‘Responsible Competition’ – directed towards bolstering the liberal international order and maintaining Western influence going forward.
