The Future of Women, Empowerment and Tolerance in Gulf Societies

Chatham House, London

Participants

Amal Al Qubaisi, President of the Federal National Council, United Arab Emirates
Chair: Peter Salisbury, Senior Research Fellow, Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House

Overview

Amal al Qubaisi, the first female president of the Federal National Council in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will discuss the success of the National Programme for Tolerance launched in June 2016. Is it proving effective in achieving its aims of combating violence, instability and extremism within a nation housing up to 200 nationalities combined with often opposing cultural norms? Does promoting tolerance of diversity effectively combat religious, societal and gender inequalities or does it exacerbate already perceived differences?

Dr al-Qubaisi will also address the UAE’s efforts to create a cohesive and empowered society through the principles outlined in Vision 2021. What could nations in the Arab world be doing to promote acceptance and empowerment within their borders?
