Generation Hong Kong: Seeking Identity in China’s Shadow

Chatham House, London

Participants

Ben Bland, South China Correspondent, Financial Times

Chair: Bill Hayton, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House

Overview

Drawing on findings from his new book, Ben Bland will investigate the struggle of Hong Kong's post-handover generation to define their place in the city - socially, economically and politically - at a time of growing uncertainty.

Referencing interviews conducted with what he coins “the hand-over generations”, Bland will discuss the identity vacuum that many young citizens of Hong Kong expressed feeling a part of. Are some citizens rejecting the Chinese Communist party ideology in place of a nascent Hong Kong nationalism? And how has Beijing reacted to this movement towards a distinct Hong Kong identity?
