Global Solutions to the Gender Equality Issue

George Washington University School of Business, Washington DC, USA

International Economics Department, Putting Gender Equality on the G20 Agenda

Overview

Empowering women and promoting their participation in economic activity across all sectors is fundamental to achieving sustainable growth.

At the G20 Summit in Brisbane in 2014, the leaders pledged to reduce 'the gap in participation rates between men and women in our countries by 25 per cent by 2025, taking into account national circumstances, to bring more than 100 million women into the labour force, significantly increase global growth and reduce poverty and inequality'.  This pledge, in addition to the one made is 2012 at the summit in Los Cabos 'to advance gender equality in all areas, including skills training, wages and salaries, treatment in the workplace, and responsibilities in care-giving' demonstrates the G20’s firm commitment to advancing gender equality in its pursuit of sustainable, balanced and inclusive economic growth.

This roundtable discussion will allow participants to assess progress and discuss concrete political and policy measures that the G20 can take to narrow gender inequality in its member states and foster economic growth.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
