Iran’s New Role in the Middle East

19 July 2017 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Chatham House, London

Dr Kamal Kharazi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Islamic Republic of Iran (1997-2005)

Chair: Dr Lina Khatib, Head, Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House

Dr Kamal Kharazi, the former Iranian minister of foreign affairs, will reflect on Iran’s role in the Middle East following the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreed between the P5+1, the EU and Iran.

How does Iran see its role in the region changing over the next few years? Where does Iran stand on the current crisis between Qatar and its GCC partners? And what part can Tehran play in combatting the prevailing Sunni-Shi’a narrative that has become a commonplace explanation for the geopolitical dynamics causing growing tensions throughout the region?
