Malaysia and China’s Belt and Road Initiative

Chatham House, London

Participants

Cheng-Chwee Kuik, Associate Professor, Strategic Studies and International Relations Program, National University of Malaysia

Overview

Malaysia’s increasingly comprehensive partnership with China is poised to bring about transformative regional impact. Over a span of four years, Malaysia has partnered with China on a range of infrastructure projects with the widest scope, fastest pace and, perhaps, the most profound effects of any country in Southeast Asia. The speaker will discuss Malaysia’s engagement with China’s Belt and Road Initiative, tracing its origins, identifying its driving and constraining factors, as well as offering a preliminary assessment on its prospects and risks in the broader East Asian context.
