Media, Satire and Modern Politics

22 September 2016 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Chatham House, London

Armando Iannucci, Writer and Producer, The Thick of It, Veep, Saturday Night Armistice and The Day Today

Chair: Nick Watt, Political Editor, BBC Newsnight

Drawing on his experience of both US and UK politics, the award-winning writer, producer and comedian, Armando Iannucci, will discuss the role that media has to play in modern political discourse.

Has the fourth estate been critically weakened by the rise of new media and 24-hour news? Are some of today’s more prominent politicians really beyond satire? And has social media given the public a new power to hold politicians to account or has it merely provided a forum for personal abuse, extreme opinions and anonymized trolling to the detriment of substantive, issue-led debate?
