On Militarism and Counterterrorism: A Malaysian Perspective
The Rt Hon. Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister, Malaysia
Chair: Lord Michael Williams of Baglan, Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Chatham House
The speaker will argue that the purely militaristic counterterrorism efforts seen worldwide are doomed to failure unless pursued alongside programmes for deradicalization and reintegration. Home to the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counterterrorism (SESRCCT), Malaysia is a country both fully committed and uniquely positioned to help its global partners in tackling the threats posed by militant groups. The country’s own deradicalization programme has been designed to address misconceptions of the radical and to reintegrate them into society. With a success rate of 97.5%, it provides a blueprint for counterterrorism programmes worldwide, emphasizing the welfare of detainees and their families.
