Modi's Economic Vision for India

Chatham House, London

Participants

Dr Bibek Debroy, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; Member, National Institution for Transforming India Aayog

Overview

For many Indians, Narendra Modi's appeal stems from his vow to boost the economy and tackle entrenched corruption within government and civil society. However, growth in India has continued to fall steadily since early 2016, with many blaming Modi’s anti-corruption purge for sapping India’s economic momentum.

The chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister will discuss Modi’s vision for India’s present and future. What are the short and long-term impacts of the recent economic reforms? Which steps has Modi taken to qualitatively improve governance across India? And can we expect Indian growth to remain sluggish in the immediate future?
