Chair: Fadi Hakura, Associate Fellow and Manager, Turkey Project, Europe Programme, Chatham House
President Erdogan’s narrow victory in the constitutional referendum on 16 April was met with concern across the European Union. For some European leaders, the proposed amendments, which will see more powers transferred to the president, mark another strain on bilateral relations, in particular the apparent divide on rule of law and human rights. All the while, there is a need for the EU and Turkey to work closely together on security and the refugee crisis. In this session, the speaker will discuss recent developments and propose what steps can be taken to move beyond the current stalemate.
