The New Emperors: Power and Princelings in China

Chatham House, London

Asia Programme

Participants

Kerry Brown, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House
Chair: Jonathan Fenby, CBE, Managing Director, China Research, Trusted Sources

Overview

The speaker will discuss the networks and relationships surrounding the current leaders of China - the seven men who sit on the standing committee of the Politburo, the summit of power in contemporary China. He will discuss how they got to where they are, their family, business, academic and provincial networks, and the key supporters of their careers. He will also consider what these men actually believe - their visions of the world, and China's place in it. He will argue that China, the supremely networked society, is now led by a networked leadership, sitting at the midst of a vast system of interlinked parts where the only common denominators are power and money.
