From Playboy to President: Trump's Evolving Views on Nuclear Weapons
Dr Heather Williams, Lecturer in Defence Studies, King's College London
Chair: Dr Jacob Parakilas, Assistant Head, US and the Americas Programme, Chatham House
Trump's personality often distracts from sober assessment of his views, particularly on nuclear weapons issues. In a recent study, Dr Jeffrey Michaels and Dr Heather Williams of King's College London catalogued Trump's statements on nuclear issues over three decades with sources ranging from presidential debates to Playboy.
This discussion will provide a summary of their findings on how Trump's views align with past Republican administrations, but also highlight ways in which those views differ and are potentially destabilizing. In particular, his attitudes towards allies remain unclear and is potentially a major shift in US national security policy while his use of Twitter as a disruptive technology could have implications on nuclear signalling.
