POSTPONED: Towards a Comprehensive Solution to Conflict in South Sudan

Chatham House, London

HE Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Republic of South Sudan
Chair: Michael Ryder CMG, Chairman, Peace Direct

Conflict between the government and rebel forces in South Sudan has continued on the ground and at the negotiating table since December 2013, sharpening divisions amongst the country’s people and its political leaders. Peace talks mediated by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Addis Ababa are set to resume in November. However, the failure of previous regional summits to secure a comprehensive ceasefire and concerns over a surge in violence as the rainy season draws to a close have lowered expectations of a genuine political commitment to end the country’s conflict.

HE Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin will discuss the government’s priorities for an effective negotiation process towards a lasting political settlement in South Sudan.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
