Rebuilding Inter-Ethnic Relations in Southern Kyrgyzstan: New Perspectives

16 May 2018 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Chatham House | 10 St James's Square | London | SW1Y 4LE

Abylabek Asankanov, Professor of History, Director of the Historical and Cultural Section, Kyrgyz Republic’s Academy of Sciences;  Corresponding Member of the Kyrgyz Republic’s Academy of Sciences
Alisher Khamidov, Newton Fellow, Newcastle University

Many unhelpful and inaccurate descriptions of the June 2010 ethnic clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan can be found in western and Kyrgyzstani political discourse. For example, ‘separatism’, ‘an attempt to destroy the state’ and other such terms widely proliferate and have serious negative consequences for inter-ethnic relations.

This roundtable will explore alternative ways of understanding the June 2010 events, and steps that need to be taken in order to avoid conflict. Professor Abylabek Asankanov and Dr Alisher Khamidov will offer brief opening remarks followed by an hour for discussion.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
