Chair: Ruth Sherlock, Middle East Correspondent, The Telegraph

Overview

The conflict in Syria has proven to be an extremely dangerous environment for the media. Numerous journalists, as well as aid workers and activists, have been kidnapped by opposition groups after crossing the border undercover to report on the country’s civil war. In April 2013 Italian-Syrian journalist Susan Dabbous was abducted and held hostage by the Islamist Jabhat al-Nusra group in northern Syria, along with three other Italian journalists. She will share insights from her ordeal, which revealed how Islamist groups are operating on the ground, the presence of foreign fighters and the role of women within such groups.
