Shaping Somalia's Post-Transitional Structures
HE Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, Prime Minister, Federal Republic of Somalia
Chair: Randolph Kent, Visiting Senior Research Fellow, King's College London
Recent airstrikes successfully targeting al Shabaab’s leaders as well as a military offensive against the insurgent group have boosted Somalia’s security outlook. The country continues along a path towards post-transitional recovery, while significant issues remain around the establishment of federal institutions and states, the need to improve government and local capacities on service delivery, continued political infighting, as well as the passing of a new media bill.
Somalia's prime minister will discuss the development of ‘post-transitional’ institutions, measures being taken to promote sustainable federalism, including the establishment of stable regional administrations, and the need to improve relations with existing regions such as Puntland. He will also discuss the humanitarian situation and likelihood of renewed famine and talk about the country’s prospects beyond planned national elections in 2016.
