The Significance of Social Media for Public Protest in Zimbabwe

Chatham House, London

Africa Programme

Pastor Evan Mawarire, Founder, #ThisFlag
Chair: Sir Henry Bellingham MP, UK Minister for Africa (2010-12)

The innovative use of social media in Zimbabwe has provided a popular digital rallying point for citizens to comment on and critique the government. #ThisFlag and other social media activist movements played a leading role in coordinating a national ‘shutdown’ on 6 July in protest against the worsening economic crisis. Non-partisan online movements have proved difficult to counter, and mark a significant change in how protest is vocalised and mobilized.

At this event Pastor Evan Mawarire, founder of #ThisFlag, will discuss the success of the movement in Zimbabwe and the significance of using social media for mass public protest.
