Strengthening Data Sharing for Public Health: Africa Regional Roundtable

16 Jun 2016 - 09:00 to 17 Jun 2016 - 17:00

Mensvic Grand Hotel, Accra, Ghana

Centre on Global Health Security, Strengthening Data Sharing for Public Health

Overview

Successful public health data sharing during the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 contributed to preventing the disease from becoming widespread. Data sharing also facilitated a robust and timely response to the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. Conversely, purposeful withholding of public health data is part of the reason why more than two years after the identification of the new Middle East respiratory (MERS) coronavirus, the source and origin of the virus remain unknown.

This roundtable meeting will bring together leading regional experts to explore past and present challenges and successes in disease surveillance data sharing in the Africa region and to understand how the project’s draft guidance could be adjusted in consideration of any specific regional requirements.

The Strengthening Data Sharing for Public Health project was launched in October 2014 with the aim to develop guidance on how to create the right environment for public health data sharing and achieve good practice.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
