Participants

Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General, Council of Europe

Chair: Anthony Dworkin, Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations

Overview

The secretary general of the Council of Europe, the depositary of the European Convention of Human Rights, will address the key challenges facing human rights, democracy and the rule of law across the European continent.

He will explain why he believes ‘democratic security’ should be the guiding mantra for Europe’s leaders, arguing for a stronger, shared commitment to democratic norms as the basis of peace and stability. The secretary general will set out his views on Europe’s biggest security dilemmas, from the fight against violent extremism to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. He will also address international challenges facing European states and discuss pan-European cooperation.
