Strengthening South Africa's Constitution for Social Transformation

2 November 2015 - 10:00 to 11:00

Chatham House, London

Lawson Naidoo, Executive Secretary, Council for the Advancement of South Africa’s Constitution (CASAC)
Chair: Dr Alex Vines OBE, Director, Area Studies and International Law; Head, Africa Programme, Chatham House

South Africa’s constitution is internationally lauded for its protection of human rights and its advancement of democratic government. Despite concerns surrounding the impact of long-term party incumbency and erosion of state institutions’ ability to implement legislation, the constitution remains the backbone of South African democracy and safeguard of the rule of law.

At this event, Lawson Naidoo will discuss the importance of the constitution as a social safeguard, examine instances of encroachment on its authority, and highlight how it can be strengthened and supported for better social transformation.
