Sudan’s Regional Role: Opportunities for Engaging Towards Stability

12 October 2016 - 12:00 to 13:00

Chatham House, London

Abdel-Ghani Al-Naim, Undersecretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Sudan
Chair: Rosalind Marsden, Associate Fellow, Africa Programme, Chatham House

International cooperation with Sudan is increasing. The European Union-Horn of Africa Migration Route initiative, known as the Khartoum Process, is at the heart of improved relations between Sudan and a number of European countries. In September 2016, the US government welcomed Sudan’s recent efforts to increase its engagement in international counterterrorism cooperation, but added that normalization of relations would require significant progress in a range of other areas. Sudan has also joined the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen’s ongoing conflict.

Sudan continues to play a prominent and active role in regional diplomatic efforts, including on South Sudan. At this event, Undersecretary Abdel-Ghani Al-Naim will discuss Sudan’s regional engagements, its relations with the international community and reflect on the current domestic political landscape.
