Sustainable Growth with Sergei Guriev
Professor Sergei Guriev, Chief Economist, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
Chair: Mina Toksoz, Associate Fellow, Global Economy and Finance Department, Chatham House
Chief economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Professor Sergei Guriev, will present The Transition Report 2017-18. The report focuses on the challenge of sustaining growth, with particular reference to the experience of middle-income economies. The analysis builds on various existing country-level, industry-level and firm-level datasets as well as unique data on road infrastructure upgrades and performance of EBRD-supported infrastructure and energy projects. The report also provides an overview of progress with structural reform and introduces a new assessment of progress in transition to sustainable market economy across the region’s economies.
Middle-income economies, on average, tend to experience a slowdown in productivity growth at income levels between one third and two thirds of that of the US. Furthermore, growth in many economies in the EBRD region is lagging behind even that of comparable middle-income countries. Having exhausted the advantages that underpinned their strong growth performance in the past, the EBRD economies require a new growth model.
This briefing will be a part of Chatham House’s International Financial Institution (IFI) Briefing series where institutions will share their thinking with leaders in business, government and academia.
Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
