Tackling Uganda's Challenges Through Transformation: Strengthening Institutions and Governance

19 June 2015 - 09:30 to 10:30

Chatham House, London

Amama Mbabazi, Secretary General, National Resistance Movement, Uganda
Chair: Muzong Kodi, Associate Fellow, Africa Programme, Chatham House

Uganda's former prime minister, Amama Mbabazi, has announced his intention to seek the presidential nomination of the ruling National Resistance Movement ahead of the 2016 elections, in a direct challenge to Yoweri Museveni, president since 1986. Oil discoveries and increasing commercial interest in Uganda have bolstered the country's prospects in recent years. Uganda also plays a key role in regional security and economic integration. Yet it continues to face critical challenges relating to development, youth unemployment, institutional strengthening and population growth.

Amama Mbabazi will discuss the policy challenges that the country faces and his perspective on how these might best be tackled.
