Overview

Nearly 70 years after Harry Truman announced his famous containment doctrine to Congress, the traditional global order seems increasingly less traditional, as China seeks greater influence on the world stage and the new US administration looks to improve relations with Russia while espousing an ‘America first’ message in regards to its dealings with other countries and international bodies. In such times, is a doctrine that promises that the US should aid all 'free people' being subjugated really still relevant?

Drawing on first hand reflections from a divisive presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Senator Tim Kaine, will discuss the Truman Doctrine and America's role in a changing world. As politics around the world becomes increasingly polemic, how might the current state of political discourse in the US affect and influence the assumed liberal world order?
