Fadi Hakura, Associate Fellow, Europe and Manager, Turkey Project, Chatham House
Chair: Lubica Pollakova, Programme Manager, Russia and Eurasia Programme, Chatham House

Overview

Turkey faces a mixture of internal and external challenges that will have implications for both its political and economic stability in 2017. Domestically, President Erdoğan is seeking to reform the constitution and expand the powers of the presidency, while regionally, the ongoing crisis in neighbouring Syria, the recent Turkey-Russia rapprochement and the prospects of the reunification of Cyprus present both choices and opportunities in the year ahead. The speaker will discuss the significance of these developments for Turkey’s democracy and foreign policy.
